Damselfly looks like a cute puppy dog |
|
The genus group of Rhinocypha are rear damselflies. All but 1 of the 8 species Rhinocypha in Borneo Island are endemic found only locally. So is their ‘face’ unique from other species of damselfly. (The one not endemic to Borneo is this species Rhinocypha humeralis )
This male Rhinocypha humeralis has a long extended frons (front of the face) that make it look like a cute puppy dog.
This damselfly was found in the mountain stream of Bukit Gemok in Tawau, Sabah.

When I first saw this pure-black damselfly, I knew this is a little known precious species. No detail description of this rear species available in the internet. I could only find a clue from Dr. Orr’s book mentioning “…..a very fine, mainly dark species……..”
The whole damselfly is pure black with metallic deep blue on the upper part of thorax. Abdomen fine and thin but the throex is robust build.

While other damselfly are colorful, the unique pure shinning black color make this young male looks more like a precious jewelry. Under direct sunlight the top of the 2 eyes shin with metallic blue.
This is the most hairy damselfly I ever seen. Never before I seen a damselfly face covered with long soft hair.

View from bottom of the last 3 segments. When view from the bottom, the male anal appendages are similar to others species in the same family.

Dragonflies in Tawau |
|
Yes. Less and less dragonfly now in the town area. To find deagonfly, we must go a few kelometers from the town. If you like dragonfly, I tell you a secret hiding place of dragonfly in Tawau. Go to Jambatan Putih, the Chinese name is 'Pak Kiew' (White Bridge). On the 2 sides of Tawau River you find many dragonflies in a bright hot sunny day.
LittleStone, you also share your photo with us when you find a new dragonfly that we can not find.

Hi Littlestone - I am not in research project. I like insects and dragonfly I like most because dragonfly is a clean insect. (Butterfly has powder on the wings not good for lung). And also dragonfly is the most oldest ancient flying insect. When you go to Pak Kiew, remember bring mosquito oil. Many mosquito in rainny season.
Hi del - Your dragonfly layang layang make me remember my childhood time in small town too. Many years ago, there were no TV, no football, no computer games, no toys. We play in outdoor under the sun .......... and with insects.
The photos I use a simple and cheap CANON PowerShot A430. The macro function is very good for close up shots.
